Three Months with Baby Jett

September 8, 2021

The last three months have absolutely flown by. Three kids under five is no joke and they have definitely all been keeping us busy. It’s been really fun though to see the shift in our family dynamic now that we have another baby. Jett has been such a fun little addition to our family and Theo are Archer are just so in love with him. We haven’t really dealt with much jealousy, both boys just seem happy to have another sibling. They ask to hold him all the time and love playing with him. I can’t wait to see how much fun they will have when Jett gets mobile.

Three boys

In the past three months Jett has had his first road trip. Considering he’s never been great in the car, we were definitely nervous. He did surprisingly well though on the drive thankfully. We went to the beach and had such a great family trip. I was nervous being in the sun and sand all day with a newborn but it was fine. We got him this beach tent and it was perfect. Light enough to carry, very easy to set up, and it gave him a safe space to comfortably nap. It’s not very big though so I can’t imagine it would be great after maybe 6-8 months. Other than having a safe and shady spot to nap, you don’t need much else for a newborn.

He has been rolling from belly to back for a few weeks now. At first that definitely made sleep tricky because he kept rolling over and getting upset. Luckily rolling isn’t a new skill anymore and three months in he seems to be a good sleeper overall.

Last month Jett started swim lessons which has been so much fun. If you have a swim school in your area, check out lessons. The one we go to offers free lessons until 6 months. He loves it and it’s been nice to have that little activity together each week.

He’s really started reaching for his toys lately. He loves laying on his play mat and hitting at the toys that dangle above him. I just got him this weird little mushroom toy and he’s obsessed. It’s easy for him to hold on to which I think he likes. He also really enjoys playing in his bouncer. I got an activity bar to put across it so that he has something to focus on. His big brothers are constantly pulling the toys off though (big brothers are annoying).

These two ask to hold their little brother probably twenty times a day.

He still has a love hate relationship with the car unfortunately. I try and time our rides for when he needs a nap but that’s not always possible. He loves the stroller and going for walks. I like that they stroller we have lays flat so he can really get comfortable and have a good nap in it. We walked a lot in San Diego and every time we would sit down to eat he would sleep right through the meal because of the walk first. It was very convenient!

Overall Jett has just been the happiest baby. He is constantly smiling at us and loves to just hang out and observe. Jordan and I joke that he gives us baby fever because he’s truly been such an easy happy baby. He just always seems happy to go with the flow. I’m interested to see if that personality trait stays around as he gets older.

Is there anything sweeter than a sleeping baby? I usually bring him into our bed around 6 and he spends his last stretch of sleep in there.
We’ve had our share of fussy moments, but he always cheers up in our Wildbird ring sling.

Sleep

Jett has been a fantastic sleeper so far and has been giving me 6-8 hour stretches since birth. He usually wakes up once between 3-4a and then again around 6 or 7. He’s generally up for the day around 8:30a. His morning wake time is the shortest and he’s usually ready for his first nap after 45 minutes. The first nap tends to be the longest around 2 hours. After that he has 3 more naps for maybe an hour or so each time. He’s an absolute breeze to get to sleep during the day and at night. Evenings however, are a challenge. I don’t know if I’m just not putting him down soon enough or if I’m putting him down too soon or what. Regardless, evenings have consistently been his most fussy time of day.

I’m a big fan of the concept of putting babies down drowsy but awake. I didn’t do that with my oldest and sleep was difficult for us. With both Archer and Jett I have done that from the start. It makes sleep so much better for everyone. Jett can put himself to sleep which means he can also get back to sleep on his own if he wakes up too soon. He uses a pacifier sometimes, and these pacifiers are the ones I’ve found to work best. They are small and light and stay in his mouth better than other ones. He sleeps in our room in the bassinet at night but I put him in his crib in the nursery during the day. So far he does well in both spaces so when we transition him to the crib at night it should hopefully be easy.

Eating

I’m exclusively breastfeeding and have been lucky to have an easy go of it again with Jett. He did have a tongue and lip tie that we got corrected when he was 5 days old which I’m sure helped. I try and stick to the eat-play-sleep schedule so I will nurse him when he wakes up instead of nursing him to sleep. The only time I nurse him to sleep is with his nighttime wake ups. He’s gaining weight really well and just shy of 14 pounds now.

Postpartum Update

As for as me, I’m doing great postpartum. The past three months seem to have flown by. Other than the first week, which is always a struggle, I’ve felt pretty good. Postpartum contractions in the early days are BRUTAL as your uterus works to shrink back down. These contractions get stronger with each birth and I was not prepared for that. I had to focus on breathing through them and they felt almost as painful as labor! Fortunately they only lasted for maybe 48 hours.

I think I was just so relieved to no longer be pregnant that the newborn stage seemed like a relief. The sleep deprivation and postpartum aches and pains were never that bothersome to me. Around 2 weeks postpartum I started doing with pelvic floor work at home and walks whenever I was up early enough to beat the heat. I didn’t start doing weights or more intense workouts until about 6 weeks postpartum and since then I’ve been working out 4-5 days per week. The only reason I’ve had the energy to work out that much though is because Jett’s a good sleeper so I feel pretty energetic.

As far as weight goes, I try not to put much focus into it. I know that I started this pregnancy about ten pounds heavier than my first two. I’ve been focusing more on just staying active and building strength as opposed to the number on the scale. I tend to lose all but the last five pounds by about 9 months and then the last few pounds come off when I’m done nursing. Breastfeeding is a big priority for me so I’m not willing to diet and risk my supply dropping. I do focus on eating healthy and nutritious foods, but that’s the norm for me.

Knowing that this is likely our last baby has made these first three months with Jett even more precious. I know that the long nights are short lived and the screaming in the car won’t last forever. This makes it easy to find joy in even the toughest moments. I look forward to seeing Jett reach all of the different milestones and have all of his firsts. And if I could slow down time a bit and keep him tiny for a bit longer I would happily.
