Theo’s 2.5 Year Update

May 8, 2019

I haven’t done an update on Theo since he turned two so I wanted to share a little bit about how he’s doing and what he’s learning. I think every new age is my favorite age, and 2.5 is no different. It’s definitely more challenging in some ways than the younger years were, but it’s also so fulfilling.

Theo is becoming so independent and loves to do things on his own. He’s learning how to put his own clothes on and take them off, and same thing with his shoes. He loves to help pack his lunch, do the laundry, vacuum the floors. If it’s something the adults do, Theo wants to do it too. He is very opinionated and also very particular about the way things should be done. If you don’t do something the way he wants it he definitely gets whiney in that typical two year old way. So far though the two’s haven’t been even remotely terrible. Some extra whining, a bit of yelling/roaring in frustration, but overall just hilarity.

Theo loved getting his face painted for the first time and sat so still.

Theo is honestly so funny and has me cracking up every single day. I see a lot of Jordan’s personality in Theo which is really awesome to witness. I swear he is just a mini version of my husband but looks like me haha. If he does something that makes you laugh, he will repeat it over and over again. I think we have the future class clown on our hands.

This is the age where his imagination is really starting to shine. We play animals and he has conversations with them. He is always pretending a toy is falling and asks another toy to help, stuff like that. The play kitchen that he got for his first birthday has been very popular with him lately and he is always cooking me food and bringing it to me. My personal favorite was the burger he brought me with a piece of toy cauliflower inside of two pieces of wooden bread. Yummm. We play pretend a lot and act like dinosaurs, PJ Masks characters, typical toddler stuff. This is the age I also looked forward to the most, because I think playing pretend is so fun haha.

Theo’s language has absolutely exploded since turning two. He repeats everything (including some bad words so we’ve had to start watching our language). He is also pretty conversational and I can understand most of what he says. There’s a bit of a lisp sometimes when saying “s” sounds, which is pretty normal for this age and he also makes a “y” sound instead of “l” a lot. This is my favorite because he also asks to “pack his yunch”, tells me he got an “owie on his yeg”, stuff like that.

Theo is super outgoing and loves to meet new people. Everyone is considered his friend and he always asks to play with his friends whenever he sees kids anywhere. We have to say hi to everyone, even if they are on the other side of the street. No matter who it is, Theo wants to chat to them.

Theo has transitioned amazingly into life as a big brother. He loves Archie so much and asks to see him first thing in the mornings when he wakes up. He gets very concerned if Archie cries and if I ask him to cheer Arch up he will do everything he can to make it happen. Archer is referred to as “Ah-cha”, “Ah-chee” and sometimes just “Ahch”.

Haha poor Arch is like “let go of me”

Theo is not afraid to verbalize his feelings and will let you know if you’ve upset him. If a kid accidentally hits him he will say “hey fwiend, no hitting peas,” and it makes me laugh every time. He is also very into his owies. If he gets a bruise or scrape he will bring it up multiple times a day until it’s completely healed.

He is still very much a momma’s boy, but he also has so much fun with dad. He has also started asking to go to Gan’s house (he calls my mum Gan) and it’s so sweet. It just seems like such an independent thing for him to ask to do. He’s growing up so fast, and now having Archer to compare him to makes Theo seem even older.

Favorites

Loves watching TV, playing at the park, and anything to do with water.

Currently loving: dinosaurs, Super Wings, PJ Masks, trucks, and frisbees.

We are constantly playing PJ Masks. He is always Gecko, I’m Owlette, dad is Catboy and Archer is “hahaha” (aka the villain, Romeo).

Still loves rock music and asks dad to play his favorite songs so he can sing along and dance. “Air Raid” by He is Legend is his current favorite song.

Favorite foods include avocado (‘cado), berries, Mac ‘n cheese (macky cheese), anything on toast, carrots and hummus, and chicken.

He’s very into rides, any kind of rides.
Carousels are his favorite and he will yell “hi” and wave to people the entire time.

Eating

If you follow along on Instagram you know that Theo has definitely gotten pickier. This probably started around age 1.5 but it is slowly getting better. He eats really good at breakfast and lunch but never seems very hungry for dinner. We’ve been doing a lot of things to make meals fun and interesting and that’s definitely helped.

Sleep

We moved Theo to a big boy bed just after he turned two and he’s done pretty good in it. He takes all of his naps in there and he falls asleep in it every night. However, he usually ends up in our bed at some point in the night. He probably stays in his room all night about two nights a week, which is an improvement over a few months ago when it was probably one night every two weeks. So we’re slowly making progress.

He’s still napping every day. Usually naps are around 1.5-2 hours, but on the days when I have a lot to do it seems like he will only nap for 45 minutes. Go figure. And then on the days when I have nothing to do and want to hang out he will sleep for three!

I looked in on him one morning and found him like this.

Potty Training

The week that Theo turned 2.5 he decided he was ready to potty train. He just started telling us when he needs to pee so we ditched the diapers and bought him undies. We are still working on pooping in the potty though, but we only started training about a week ago so he’s doing really well. He tells me when he needs to poop and I put a pull up on him and make him go in the bathroom, so hopefully soon we can skip the pull up altogether.

I am loving this current age, Theo is seriously just my best buddy. We have so much fun together and I feel so incredibly fortunate to have such a sweet loving funny little boy. He’s constantly kissing and hugging me and telling me he loves me and there’s nothing better.
