Postpartum Essentials

postpartum essentials

During pregnancy, we spend so much time preparing for baby and making sure we have everything that baby needs. But what about us? The fourth trimester, or the postpartum period, is a beautiful time but it does require some preparing for. Your body is going through a huge change, so follow along to make sure you have everything that you need for this time.

  • Depends Silhouette for Women for the first 3ish days- your bleeding will likely be heavy at first, and this can be a little bit more comfortable than a pad.
  • Padsicles (alcohol free Witch Hazel, aloe vera, tea tree essential oil, lavender essential oil). There are a ton of tips for making these on Pinterest and they are a life saver for your lady parts post delivery.
  • Always Maxi Extra Heavy Overnight Pads with Wings for overnight for the first week when bleeding is the heaviest. You can use these for making the padsicles.
  • Always Ultra Thin Extra Long Pads with Wings- once your bleeding slows down these are a lot more comfortable.
  • Always Ultra Thin Overnight Pads
  • Always Panty Liners for when your postpartum bleeding is tapering off but has not completely resolved.
  • Earth Mama Herbal Perineal Spray– this cooling spray is so soothing for postpartum soreness and swelling and comes in a spray bottle that can be sprayed upside down (genius).
  • Earth Mama Herbal Sitz Bath – you can use this herbal combination as a sitz bath or you can brew it and add it to your padsicles. Either way it adds an extra level of comfort for postpartum when your body is healing.
  • Fridababy Peribottle– Using a peribottle when you go to the bathroom postpartum makes peeing much less stressful. If you have any kind of tear it will likely burn when you pee while your body is healing. Fill up your peribottle with warm water and apply a constant stream to your lady bits while urinating for some relief from the burning. The FridaBaby Fridet is nice because it’s angled to reach those hard to reach places that you actually need the peribottle for.
  • Stool softener- the last thing you want to do after pushing out a baby is have to worry about straining on the toilet.  If you had any kind of pain relief given to you during birth , constipation may be a side effect you deal with afterwards.  A stool softener will help you go to the bathroom with ease and can be used for a few days postpartum if necessary.

Nursing Necessities

  • Earth Mama Organics Nipple Butter – nursing can be tough in the beginning and the last thing you want to deal with is dry cracked nipples.  I used this after every time Theo nursed for the first month or so and never had any issues or nipple pain, so I swear by it!
  • Nursing Pads- You will always want to have a nursing pad in your bra for the first couple of weeks if not the first couple of months of nursing.  Leaking is inevitable and have a nursing pad in to catch the leaks is a lot better than walking around in a milk stained shirt in public. I like these Reusable Nursing Pads for overnight and when I am at home.  They can just be thrown in the wash with the rest of your clothes and are much more comfortable.  I use these disposable nursing pads if I am going to be out and about or to have as a backup in case I don’t have any reusable ones that are clean.
  • Overnight nursing bra
  • Daytime Nursing bras
  • Water bottle- There is no thirst like the thirst you experience when you’re nursing. This Healthy Human Insulated Tumbler is my favorite because it keeps your water nice and cold and I crave ice cold water when I’m really thirsty.
