New Year’s Resolutions: Yes or No

December 27, 2017

How was everyone’s holiday?  Ours was so much fun.  There’s something so magical about having a child and getting to experience things through their eyes.  Theo was loving all of the festivities this year and had so much fun on Christmas day.  He wasn’t really interested in opening presents, but I’m sure he’ll have fun with it next year.  So now that Christmas has come and gone for another year, I guess it’s time to start thinking about the New Year.  What’s everyone’s opinion on setting resolutions for the New Year?  Do you make them?  And if so… do you feel like you actually keep them?

I think that it’s easy to get carried away with resolutions and make them somewhat unachievable.  I mean, you’re basically asking yourself to commit to a change for an entire year.  Personally, I think that a year is a really long time, and it sets the majority of people up for failure by February.  Small, incremental goals are often more achievable.   It allows you to actually make a change and commit to a time frame that is less intimidating.  After your shorter time period is up, you should take some time to reflect on how you feel and whether you feel like you’ve accomplished your goal.  Chances are if you made the right resolution you will be feeling good.  If so, you can extend the goal and commit to a longer period of time.  Doing so makes it much more likely that you will continue to be successful with your resolution.

I’m going to share my three New Year’s resolutions with you, but my goal for these resolutions is one month.  At the end of January hopefully I will feel good enough that committing to a longer period of time won’t be so daunting to me.

Exercise.

This is a big one because I love to exercise and I love how it makes me feel, but I’ve been so lazy for the past few months.  My goal is to exercise 3-4 times each week.  I don’t really include walking in my personal exercise goal because while I think that walking is a great form of exercise, I tend to walk my dog most days anyway.  My personal fitness goals are to stretch more and build more muscle.  I’ve signed up for Classpass, because I feel like it’s a good way to commit yourself to a work out.  Classpass is a monthly membership that allows you to buy classes to different gyms and studios in your area.  You can use the website to see what workout classes are included in your area, and then you can book a class straight through Classpass.  Click this link to check out what classpass is and read more about it.  If you sign up through my link you get $30 off your first month (I get a referral fee as well). It’s been hard for me to get into a routine that includes time for exercise in it, but I know it’s something that I need to work on, so that brings me to the next resolution on my list…

Wake up early.

I am a morning person and I love waking up early and having time to myself before the day gets started. However, since having Theo waking up early has been so much more difficult. Granted, in the beginning he was waking up at night so I needed to catch up on sleep whenever possible. Now though, he sleeps all night long so there’s no real excuse for me to not wake up early. So my goal is to wake up at 5:30 six days a week.  I can use that time to either exercise, blog, or to just drink my coffee in peace.

Make time for me.

I’m pretty sure this is just a mom thing. I’ve found that since having Theo it’s been so difficult for me to justify making time for myself.  Now that I’m working part-time it’s even harder for me to take time for myself.   That’s time that I could be spending with Theo.  However, I have noticed that when I regularly get a little bit of time to myself I am an overall happier person.  I’m an introvert and I like my quiet time.  So, my goal is to set aside time for myself more often and to actually enjoy it without feeling guilty.
